A sound library or sample library contains the sounds of various instruments in digital form. A Player is the software that plays those sounds. ARIA can play no sounds unless it is loaded with samples from one or more sound libraries that are compatible with ARIA such as the Garritan sound libraries.

ARIA was designed from the ground up for playability and musicality. More than just playing back samples, the ARIA engine provides specially tailored acoustic programming designed to reproduce the sounds of actual instruments, and imparts expressive controls to those sounds.

The ARIA interface is mostly standardized across libraries. With most other libraries, the look and feel remain relatively constant. Controls will be instrument-specic with varying controls and keyswitches to accommodate each patch.

As a plug-in, the ARIA Engine plugs into a host program, usually a sequencer or supported notation program. Running as a standalone, only one instance of ARIA can be run at a given time. This will typically allow only 16 channels.

Used as a plug-in, it will be possible to open up multiple instances of the ARIA Engine at the same time. Each instance of ARIA will usually allow 16 channels. Running 8 instances will give you instruments. Each library will appear in the instrument slot and its associated instruments and groups will appear in a hierarchical folder structure. Details about each library and related instruments are provided in library-specic manuals.
